New Online Community for Local Doctors with Handheld Computers |
SEREMBAN: A group of final year medical students from the International
Medical University (IMU) have combined effort in putting up a website
to promote and support the use of handheld computers or Personal Digital
Assistants (PDA) amongst healthcare professionals in Malaysia. The
International Medical University Personal Digital Assistant User Group,
based on the Internet at http://imupda.coolfreepages.com/, aims to
elevate the awareness and competency of handheld computing in contemporary
medical practice through members' close interaction with each other
on a common platform.
The User Group, initially targeted towards health practitioners from
the population of tech-savvy instructors and medical students from
IMU and its teaching hospital at Hospital Besar Seremban, will now
be opened for participation to all allied health personnel nationwide.
Yee Szemen, one of three founding members of the User Group, said
he hoped to make the website an easy and straightforward medium for
users to exchange ideas about their experiences with computing using
the palm-sized Personal Digital Assistants in association with direct
and indirect care of the patient. "Adoption of handheld computers
in clinical practice is increasing at a healthy rate, which itself
is something very encouraging for the innovation of healthcare delivery
in this country," he said. "It is only natural that an organization
exists to connect and support these adopters to increase their capacity
for optimal utilization of handheld computers."
Recent data has proliferated to suggest that as much as an estimated
50% of physicians in the United States will use handheld computers
by 2005. Furthermore, the mobile device has been shown to be a significantly
useful tool in assisting the physician at the point of care of patients
in clinical settings. A PDA user himself for more than a year, Yee
is convinced that a naysayer or laggard in this respect would only
serve to be left behind.
Members to the online User Group will be able to exchange messages
with fellow users on its moderated forum. Pertinent from a local perspective,
visitors can also view news updates, recommended downloads, Internet
links and reviews on the website. Registration is free and opened
to healthcare professionals who are both existing PDA users and those
wise enough to consider purchasing one in the near future.
International Medical University is the country premier private medical
school in which medical students are expected to attain a satisfactory
proficiency in information technology as part of its education philosophy.
